A misdemeanor is a lower-level crime that, in Massachusetts, is not punishable by state prison time. Our office represents clients in misdemeanor cases before the Massachusetts district courts. It is very important that immigrants, particularly those who are undocumented, have complete information about the consequences any criminal issues may have on their immigration case. A “conviction” for immigration purposes is more than what a conviction is in state court. For example, a case that is continued without a finding or where an anger management or substance abuse course is required — any restraint on liberty– is a conviction for immigration purposes and that could put the person’s immigration status at risk. It is important to have someone fighting for you who knows exactly how what happens in your criminal case impacts your immigration case.
